The building housing Mayfair Mercato has a long history dating back to the early 1700s. It was initially a fish market located in the heart of London. In the early 1800s, the market moved to its current location on Oxford Street.

Tucked away in the streets behind the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street is Mayfair Mercato. The food hall, as we currently know it, opened its doors in 2019 and has been a well-known destination for both tourists and Londoners alike. Mayfair Mercato was built on an old car park and warehouse site.

The building has been completely modernised and now features a beautiful glass atrium, marble floors, and brass fixtures. The food hall is home to various food stalls, including an Italian deli, a seafood stall, a British butcher, and a patisserie. 

 

 

What To Expect Visiting Mayfair Mercato

The Mercato Metropolitano Mayfair is part of a string of food courts that have been popping up all over London. You can find one in Elephant and Castle as well which was their first one in the UK having started the concept in Milan. In addition to Flat Iron and Vinegar Yard in Southwark and Kingly Court in Soho.

The food stalls are all manned by knowledgeable and passionate staff who are more than happy to chat with customers about their produce. The atmosphere at Mayfair Mercato is casual yet refined, making it the perfect place to enjoy a quick snack or linger over a leisurely meal. 

 

Some of the market’s most popular stalls include Holy smokes BBQ, which serves up American-style BBQ ribs and pulled pork sandwiches, and Khao San Road, which offers Thai street food at its finest.

These are popular with tourists because they offer a taste of home. However, plenty of stalls also cater to the more adventurous eater. For example, Bao Bao is a Chinese steamed bun stall that offers a range of fillings, including pork, chicken, and vegetarian options. There’s also an Indian curry stall and a Korean fried chicken stall.

 

In addition to the great food on offer, the Mercato Mayfair is also home to a number of unique shops and boutiques. Highlights include Nina De Chiffre, which sells vintage clothing and accessories, and Odds & Ends, an eclectic mix of curiosities ranging from antique typewriters to taxidermy animals.

There is also a wide variety of sweet treats, including freshly baked cakes and cookies from Flour Station and artisan ice cream from Gelato Mio. 

 

Note: Don’t be fooled by how quiet it looks as I took these pictures in the morning just as they opened. It can get a bit busy but still get atmosphere so well worth checking out.
